David B

David Battersby OBE – Founding Director, Hospitality and Leisure Manpower (HALM)

During a successful career spanning over 50 years David has contributed to the work of many Employer Associations, Professional Bodies, Tourist Boards, Government Agencies and the Media to raise standards of education and training across the hospitality and tourism industry – achievements recognised in 1998 when he was made an OBE in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours.

David has devised and managed a number of skill competitions and award schemes for the hospitality industry. These have included the ‘Young Chef and Waiter of the Year’; ‘Hospitality World Skills’; the ‘Hospitality Apprenticeship Awards’ and ‘Business Excellence Awards’. For over 35 years he has managed the ‘Roux Scholarship’ for Michel and Albert Roux, and in 2012 helped found, and became organiser of, ‘The Gold Service Scholarship’, with Her Majesty the Queen becoming its first Patron. David is now Secretary to the Trustees of The Gold Service Foundation.

As an Ambassador for Tourism for All David is looking forward to helping make access to travel and accommodation much better, and more widely available, to those with disabilities.

Bernard Donaghue

Bernard Donoghue – Director, ALVA

Bernard is the Director of ALVA (the Association of Leading Visitor Attractions) and is the Mayor of London's Ambassador for Cultural Tourism.

Bernard says “I am delighted and honoured to be asked to be an Ambassador for Tourism for All. Tourism benefits everyone, everywhere, every day and I firmly believe that everyone should be able to enjoy, access and participate in our outstanding cultural assets as well as the range of our tourism and hospitality services. I want to play my part in championing tourism's inclusivity and accessibility.”

Robin S

Robin Sheppard – Chairman, Bespoke Hotels Limited

Robin is the Chairman of Bespoke Hotels Limited and is currently the Chairman of the Institute of Hospitality.

Robin has been an hotelier for over 40 years, winning many Hotel/Hotelier of the Year awards. He co-founded Bespoke Hotels in 2000 and the group now has over 200 properties, including the multi-award winning Hotel Gotham. Most recently, he won the Hotel Catey and the Oxford Brookes awards for Outstanding Contribution to the Hospitality Industry. Robin’s greatest achievement, though, has been to fight back from GBS, a totally paralysing illness. His slow recovery inspired him to launch the Bespoke Access Awards, in conjunction with RIBA, encouraging better design and empathy from architects, interior designers and hospitality professionals alike.

Robin is also the Government’s Hospitality Sector Champion for Disabled People and an Ambassador and evangelist for Tourism for All.

Tom S

Tom Shakespeare – Academic and Broadcaster

Tom is currently Professor of Disability Research at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

In his research and advocacy, and in his former role at the World Health Organization, Tom has travelled internationally, often adding a few days as a tourist onto his engagements with universities and UN agencies. He loves meeting new people, eating different food, and enjoying the natural landscape. He has a great fondness for the North – Newfoundland, Iceland, Finland, Norway – but also a great love for Africa, and he has spent happy times also in Australia and New Zealand. His mother originates from Sri Lanka, another favourite.

As a wheelchair user, Tom has encountered various barriers, both natural and man-made, and has usually found a solution through goodwill and negotiation – and a bit of crawling. He advocates for the removal of attitudinal and physical barriers to the full participation of disabled people and, as an Ambassador he plans to support Tourism for All in any way that he can to make accessible tourism and travel better.
